MMA spells out desired health reforms

MINNEAPOLIS, May 6, 2008 - The MMA sent a letter to the 11 members of the health care reform conference committee Tuesday providing on-the-spot analysis of health reform ideas recently proposed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Members of the health care conference committee who are engaged in the final negotiations of Minnesota’s most significant health reform bill in several years requested the letter. The MMA jumped at the chance to weigh in at this key point in the negotiations.

The letter comments on the governor’s proposals regarding payment reform, creating a nonprofit entity to implement reform, and investing in public health.

The letter expresses the MMA’s general support for the governor’s recommendations and reiterates the MMA’s strong opposition to any payment system that is based on total cost of care that turns physicians into insurers and managers of risk. The MMA also sent the letter to the governor’s health care policy staff.
