Minnesota's Future Doctors gets $1 million gift

MINNEAPOLIS, March 4, 2008—An anonymous gift of $1 million has been made to the Mayo Clinic Medical School and the University of Minnesota, for a joint training program called Minnesota's Future Doctors.

Minnesota's Future Doctors is a six-week program that assists financially needy medical school students from minority populations or rural areas in learning about clinical care and research. One part of the program focuses on learning what it means to serve ethic populations by shadowing Mayo and university doctors, according to an announcement.

The program began last summer with 23 students, but by 2009 it expects to be help 150 students, and was recently featured in a  Rochester Post-Bulletin story.

The Minnesota Medical Association Foundation, the charitable arm of the MMA,  announced a $10,000 donation to Minnesota’s Future Doctors in February.

Gina Allen is a member of Minnesota's Future Doctors who became excited about medicine after an internship doing luekemia research with John H. Kersey, M.D., in 2004.

Minnesota’s Future Doctors identifies outstanding undergraduate students from underserved communities and helps them further their dreams of becoming a doctor by exposing them to the world of medicine through a host of activities, such as shadowing physicians, learning about scientific research, and attending seminars.

The program is seeking physician volunteers for its student shadowing program. To learn more, visit http://www.meded.umn.edu/futuredocs or contact Jo Peterson at 612/625-7951.
