Free, new patient education materials in many languages

MINNEAPOLIS, April 3, 2008— An assortment of 23 health communication brochures, translated into 14 languages, are available from te U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immmigrants.

The following is an announcement on the availability of 23 health communication brochures translated into 14 languages. The materials are provided online for free download via the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants' (USCRI) website (www.refugees.org/hltoolkit) available for download free of charge.

This batch of brochures are available in Arabic, Amharic, Vietnamese, English, Burmese, Swahili, French, Spanish, Hmong, Farsi, Kirundi,
Bosnian, Karen, Somali, and Russian.

Topics covered in the new set of brochures are:

Violence in the home
Health insurance and Medicaid
Living with disabilities in the US
Personal and home hygiene
Dental care and hygiene
Healthy pregnancy
Keeping your baby healthy
Watching your child grow
Common respiratory infections (bronchitis, influenza, and pneumonia)
Asthma
There are an additional 13 brochures available in all 15 languages:

1. HIV/AIDS prevention and stigma
2. STDs
3. Cold & flu
4. TB
5. Stop smoking
6. Diabetes
7. Heart disease
8. Obesity
9. Child obesity
10. Pap test and mammograms
11. Menstrual cycle
12. Patients rights
13. Emergency room

These brochures are a great tool to help fill in communication gaps between the service provider and the client. All brochures are written at a 5th grade reading level and are culturally appropriate.

They are best utilized in conversation with patients and should not be handed off without discussion.
