Tobacco/Secondhand smoke

Passing Freedom To Breathe

The MMA’s top legislative priority was achieved when the Freedom to Breathe Act was signed into law in 2007. This bill prohibits smoking in indoor workplaces, including bars and restaurants, and on public transporation. Preventing death and disease caused by tobacco and secondhand smoke has long been an MMA goal.

The statewide clean-air law was a major victory. But there is still a danger that opponents may try to delay the law's implementation, have the law overturned in court, or repeal it next year.

The MMA will continue to raise awarness of the health dangers of secondhand smoke, build support for the new law, and direct smokers to resources that can help them kick their addiction to tobacco.
