Imaging Services

The MMA has called for an end to requirements that physicians go through a process of utilization review with a third-party vendor before ordering imaging procedures, such as CT, MRI, and PET scans. Physicians have criticized the requirement, saying that the consultations are a waste of their time, their clinics’ resources, and their patients’ patience. The MMA has urged health plans to withdraw the program, called on the Commissioner of Commerce to investigate potentially unlawful utilization review, and worked with legislators to draft a bill to suspend imaging authorizations.

The MMA recommends:

  • There be a community-wide effort to collect information that will result in a clear understanding of high-tech imaging use throughout Minnesota.
  • Data be used to develop solutions that will address any inappropriate use of high-tech imaging.
  • Health care providers rapidly move towards implementing evidence-based decision tools.
