Founded in 1958, the MMA’s charitable foundation changed its name in 2007 to become the Minnesota Medical Association Foundation.
Over the years, the MMA Foundation focused primarily on supporting the next generation of physicians with student loans. Other activities responded to current needs and included health education programs, support for physicians, and disaster relief.
The 2006 strategic plan affirmed the direction of the foundation and refined its focus. Today, the foundation fulfills its mission by providing scholarships for medical students and working to improve access to high-quality health care in rural and urban areas throughout Minnesota.
What the MMA Foundation is doing
Scholarships. In cooperation with the medical schools of University of Minnesota and Mayo Medical Center, the MMA Foundation provides four-year scholarships to promising students.
Serving the underserved. Currently, the MMA Foundation is working to improve access to care in underserved urban and rural areas throughout Minnesota. In collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Health’s Office of Rural Health and Primary Care, the MMA Foundation is helping rural communities attract physicians to practice in under-served rural areas through the Rural Physician Loan Forgiveness Program.
The MMA Foundation also provides grant support to Minnesota’s Future Doctors, a program that identifies outstanding undergraduate students from underserved communities and helps them further their dreams of becoming a doctor.
Quality improvement. The MMA Foundation provided support for the publication of the MMA Quality Review, a supplement to Minnesota Medicine. Its purpose is to help physicians continuously improve quality of care and stay aware of the quality-improvement efforts underway in Minnesota.
Health education. The Foundation provided support for the play "The Power of the Pyramid" and the educational materials that go with it that aim to help school children understand the importance of good nutrition and regular physical activity. This educational program made important life lessons more powerful by linking in-school experiences with family activities and reinforcing messages from the community, specifically from physicians. This program was part of the MMA’s efforts to prevent childhood obesity.
